Pedro Perez
Born in the East End of London of Spanish parents for last 35 years I have lived in Harlesden. My only formal art education was ‘O’ level art, at school in 1960!
Throughout my early life, visually, I have been influenced by black and white photographs, mostly those in my family photograph album. Film noir, both European and American have also played a part in my fondness for monochrome. I come from the age of monochrome.
I have for several years been fascinated by the iconic design of the Leica camera. Most cameras style their design on the early Leica models. Many times on passing photographic shops, my eyes have been drawn to them but I have never plucked up the courage to buy one, especially having never studied photography.
Four or five years ago I suddenly plucked up the courage and bought my first Leica model III(1937) with a Summar lens and a couple of 400asa rolls of 35mm film. The sales assistant gave me a very short introduction to settings plus a light meter and off I went!
All of the photographs on display have been mostly taken by Leica cameras, manufactured in the 1930’s. My main theme is the ordinariness that you might see passing by, or something out of the norm, but still, I hope retaining a certain visuality that interests the eye.
My locations are mostly streets, festivals, carnivals, street parties, seaside resorts, back alleys, demonstrations, sport grounds and street exhibitions.
You must remember that with an old rangefinder camera, you need to focus on your subject, have your meter readings set on the camera and hope that what attracted you to shoot hasn’t moved. Once all those parameters are confirmed, press the release button, trying never to jerk it!
It’s only in these last four years that I have passionately and consistently taken my Screw Leica’s out into the streets. I have focused on minor and uncontrived moments, the mundane, and life’s side show, that by chance I was able to record.
Since I joined the Leica Society, a number of my photographs have been published in ‘The Leica Society’ magazine and I have participated in their annual AGM exhibition.
I recently held my first exhibition called Side Show, at The Gallery at Willesden Green Library.
During the showing of the film, Will and Testament, about Tony Benn, I displayed a number of photographs of him at Tolpuddle.
